Sacred Circularties Hoop Dance Retreat in Bali**Poi Retreats**Bali Spirit Festival

Hey there Hoopers and Burners!

Some friends and I are creating the most amazing hoop dance event ever
on the beautiful island of Bali. We are super-stoked about blending
yoga, sound meditation, sacred geometry, and ecstatic movement with
the hoop dance flow. Jocelyn Gordon of Hoop Dance DC is one of the
featured teachers. I've created a web page that should provide you
with all the information you need. (If you need more information,
that's okay too.)
Here's the link:

www.dchoopcollective.com
Scroll down a little for the retreat link.

You can also RSVP on the Sacred Circularities Facebook page:
www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php

Also, for you flow artists and festival goers, there are two other
events happening in Bali before and after our Sacred Circularities
retreat.

Nick Woolsey is offering two poi retreats from March 1-14. Find out
more at www.playpoi.com
Then, the 2010 Balispirit Festival happens three days after Sacred
Circularities. Find out more at www.balispiritfestival.com
I made a 3-minute film about the 2008 Balispirit Festival. You can
check it out here: www.vimeo.com/1811908

All three events are happening at the gorgeous retreat center Bali
Purnati. www.balipurnati.com

Here's the poster for the event. Feel free to distribute widely. Thanks!

Love,
Jaguar Mary

HOOP ALERT PART II: SILVER/BLACK/RED hoop accidentally swapped

Ok, not that I am back from traveling, I have checked the red black and silver hoop that someone left at Elysium...since a couple people thought it was my missing hoop, as it turns out....it is not.

The striping is different and the tubing is of a different weight.

So, if you went to Elysium and own a SILVER BLACK and RED hoop....**PLEASE* check it....if it all of a sudden looks a little different and feels a little lighter...you probably have my hoop, and I have yours.

Please forward this to anyone who went and owns a similar hoop.

**sigh**

Lowe's no longer carries the 100 and 160 psi 3/4" tubing in any of their California stores. Other than McMaster Carr, does anyone know of any suppliers? I only make a few hoops for fairs and would like a new source. I am not interested in premade hoops. Thanks!

Hello happy hoopers,

The weather was so beautiful this past Sunday, I've been inspired to go out again this weekend. Plus, this is my last free weekend in May - might as well take advantage!

I'll be out there again this Sunday from 1-3 at the grassy park between the Venice/Santa Monica border, around Speedway/Barnard Way. Bring your hoop, water, sunscreen and dance the afternoon away with me, my husband who will DJ for us, and anyone who wants to stop by and pick up a hoop. I'll bring extra hoops, if anyone needs one. Spread the word to anyone who might be interested.

Hope to see you guys out there!

Wendy

From Neilson Way, go south onto Marine St. (heading towards the beach) - Marine will convert into Bernard Way. Bernard Way will curve to the right and you will see a grassy park on the left (west side of the street - that's where we'll be) - you will find a parking lot on your left, past the grassy park (Lot 5). Look for lots of shiny hoops! There is also metered parking on Neilson Way and street parking off of Rose, which is just south of Marine.

I've been hooping for awhile now. Hooping is super fun, but I sometimes come across experiences i know can be improved. I finally put some ideas into tangible solutions and started a hoop shop.

The first products are cushy hoops that minimize practice bruises, Hoop racks that solve hoop storage issue, and fur hoops that offer a flashy alternative to funky outfits. Please see www.hoophut.etsy.com and let me know what you think, any inquiries, comments or suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Material Quest

Hi guys :]
I've been dying to pick up hooping for a while now, but damn are the main materials hard to find!

I've searched and called Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, Aqua-Flo, and some other irrigation places.
I actually found the connectors at Ace.. but the 3/4" appears to be the inner diameter of the ones I got. Needa' switch those. =/

The tubing is what's really being a problem, do any of you know of a specific store that usually carries the 3/4" 160 PSI tubing? Has anyone gotten some tubing recently and could point me in the right direction?
I'm in Torrance, and the Lowe's on Western Ave. got my hopes up... The website says it's in stock - but the employees said otherwise.
I'd really, really like to avoid buying it online.

Thank youuu <3

Get your groove on at the Playboy Mansion

Hello fellow hoopers (and hoop troupes),

I'm posting this performer solicitation on behalf of my employer. It's an unpaid gig, but you can market yourself all you want and have fun after your performance, mingling with marijuana legalizers at the Playboy Mansion!
-------------------------
Want to attend a party at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles for free? The Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States, is soliciting the volunteer participation of performers to provide glow/LED dance performances at its 4th annual party at the Playboy Mansion on June 4 (specifically, MPP is looking for performers that have experience in fire and/or LED/black light performances). Volunteers would be asked to perform for up to an hour during the event, and in exchange will be able to enjoy the remaining three hours of the party. Performers should be insured and fire performers should adhere to NAFAA safety standards (please visit http://www.nafaa.org for more information). All interested performers should be able to submit links to online video demos or past performances. If you or your performance troupe are interested in performing, please submit your resume, contact information and sample videos to MPP's Sara Cannon at SCannon@mpp.org. Thank you for your interest! These performances will be an integral part of an unforgettable event, which will help further our progress toward ending marijuana prohibition.

Venice/Santa Monica hooping Feb 1?

I'll be in Santa Monica, quite near the beach, the weekend of February 1st. Is there a regular Sunday afternoon jam I can join? (Or is everyone going to be watching the Super Bowl?)

I usually have to fly back on Sunday evening and miss everything, but this time we're returning on Monday. I'm a fairly newbie hooper but would love to get more experience (especially since it will be an emotionally-charged weekend for me).

Assistance needed: How do I get the word out?

What's up, LA Hoopers?

I have two quick questions for you guys and I was any of you could help me.

1. I'm coming to SoCal in two weeks and I'm teaching workshops in San Diego, LA, and Ventura. Can anyone suggest to me ways to let the hoopers in those areas (specifically LA) that I'm coming. Like is there a weekly or something I should run an ad in or person I should contact? Our workshops are usually pretty well attended, but I always get messages from people afterward who tell me that didn't know about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2. Are they any hoop happenings going on Feb. 7th, 8th, or 9th. I would love to get up and jump in on something if there is anything going on? Are you guys still doing a Venice/Santa Monica thing?

Much Love to you guys, and thanks in advance for any help.

Hoop-making class in Venice

I'm hosting a hoop-making class on Sunday, Jan. 18. It's only $15 and you get to keep the beautiful hoop you make. I have room for one more person in that class. I'm going to offer the same class in February, but haven't selected a date yet.

If you're interested in participating, or know someone who is, contact me soon. If you can't do Jan. 18 but would be up for a Feb. class, let me know which weekend days in Feb. work for you so I can finalize a date.

I've made most of my own hoops (my PSIhoops and Holistic Hooping fire hoop excepted) and have all the materials to make hoops of various sizes, weights, and beautiful tape jobs.

Get in the holiday spirit as Hoodathunk Entertainment presents the 4th anual Holiday Jam taking place Wednesday Dec. 17 at the Blue Cafe in downtown Long Beach, CA. A complete evening of festive decor, fun music, and very merry fans. Bring your HOOPS!!!

Headlining the night will be the new-grass rootsicana sound of S. Lake Tahoe's Blue Turtle Seduction who recently held their own festival in California, "Las Tortugas" featuring other acts such as Melvin Seals with JGB, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, and Delta Nove to name a few.

Getting things warmed up will be a special drumming performance by Long Beach's own Delta Nove, guaranteed to get your ass shaking and make you lose a couple of those extra pounds put on this time of year.

Opening the show will be Delta Nove's drummer Dominic Feedam on guitar performing his solo looping side project.

Performing Hoopers?

Hi LA Hoopers,
I have been hooping for over three years and have been browsing Tribe for just as long. I see so many posts of people coming together and creating hoop performance troupes (NOT hoop groups)
I am a comic and a natural ham, I love to dress up and perform. I even make videos for youtube. But, I'm not so keen on hooping alone. I just don't think my skills are quite mad enough to carry a performance solo, although they are pretty mad indeed. But, I am interested in meeting another local, dedicated hooper who might want to try and create a performance duo with me. I see so many posts here in Hollywood for gogo dancers and specialty performers, this is the entertainment hub of America afterall.
So, if someone who is at least an intermediate hooper and lives in Hollywood or close by and is interested in this idea, please send me a private message and I'll write right back.

Are you guys still doing the hula hooping group on the weekends? I've been looking for other people to hula hoop with near the beach, so this group looks great.

Thanks,

A friend of mine in Northern LA is looking for somebody with a hoop business to come participate in her wellness fair. Below is the information and her contact info. I think it would be great for somebody in area. Thanks to Ike I don't have power or internet access.( borrowing friends computer now) so please contact Kimberly directly! Thanks Rebecca

----> Message.

wanted to talk to you regarding a business opportunity for you or someone you know in the Hoop business! My company is putting on a Wellness Fair on Thursday, October 16th from 10 am - 1 pm at our Northridge Site (different from my location below, but very close.) There will be approximately 20 booths from local gyms, medical facilities, yoga, nutritionist, food, massages, pick-up basketball, volleyball games, demo classes and raffle for our staff. I am on the Wellness committee and offered a fun side to fitness as in your Hoops. They were excited about the idea of someone doing presentations of hooping and very open to someone selling hoops or offering private classes at their booth. I know it would be quite a stretch to ask you to come since we are actually asking for donations for this event (our company is non-profit) and could not provide any monetary support to you, but I thought you might have someone in mind from LA who would do a demonstration and someone who would want to sell their hoops at our Wellness Fair. What you think?

I'll try and call you this weekend!

Has anyone taken or know of any advanced hooping classes being taught in the Los Angeles area? I've checked both Rayna's and Anah's websites, but can't find offerings for advanced classes. I'm considering a private class, but the cost is expensive, and plus I have more fun learning in groups. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Registration Links to HoopPath Workshops in California 4/12-4/21

Howdy!

We've finally got these registration links a-goin' for all our California workshops next month. We will present the following workshops:

Saturday April 12th and Sunday April 13th: HoopPath Santa Cruz
Monday April 14th: HoopPath Intensive, Santa Cruz
Wednesday April 16th: HoopPath LA
Thursday April 17th: HoopPath Ojai
Saturday April 19th and Sunday April 20th: HoopPath San Francisco
Monday April 21st: HoopPath Intensive, San Francisco

Things to bear in mind: All of the workshops except for the two intensives are suitable for hoopers of ANY SKILL LEVEL, total beginners and hoop professionals alike. Because the HoopPath is a unique approach with its own language and specific imagery that we share and learn from together, even a highly advanced hooper will need to become familiar with our terms and concepts to be able to fully benefit from the exercises.

The workshops will all be quite rigorous. You will need to pace yourself, particularly if you are a beginning hooper, and please remember to bring some water to stay refreshed and hydrated. We do a lot of talkin', but we do a LOT of hoopin' too!

Finally, in Santa Cruz and San Francisco, the Saturday-Sunday workshops are a prerequisite for the Monday intensives.

Even though I seem to have gotten caught in some kind of yokel persona above (yee-haw!) I can still answer any of your questions if you write to me here or at ann@hooppath.com

Here's the links! All of 'em!

1. By all means, bring your hoop to a party or club, but if there are a ton of happy people dancing, don't whip it out in the middle of them and start hooping. It just takes up too much space.

2. If you are hooping indoors, with lots of people standing close, relax. Take it a little easy. And ... drop it twice and you're out. Move away before you do some damage, drink some water and don't drive.

I made a mistake in a hoop craft today and now I am in need of a blue prismatic tape. I just ordered tapes this week and I don't want to place another order just for one tape. Does anybody have some that I can buy, even if it's just half roll? or we can trade for other colors.

I dont have to work until 7p both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, but Sunday is a belly dancing swapmeet I want to check out, so anyone interested in a little hoopiness on Saturday afternoon?

Btw is there anyone interested in coming to Simi Valley to hoop? I usually end up driving to Santa Monica to hoop on that small grass patch but we have a HUGE park in simi that has trees for shade and tons of space and it would be great for hooping. I know its out of the way for the majority, but its a large grassy space, which is apparently hard to come by.

Hi Hoopers! I was just at Studio Depot in Hollywood today and they had gaffer tape on sale for $3.59 a roll. Thought other hoop makers might like to know. It's only certain colors (red, navy, green yellow), and it's the plain-core cloth gaffer (not the tape that says "pro-gaffer"). It's on an endcap at the front of the store.

HoopingHarmony vs Superhooper LED Hoop ??!!

I have a gig in Tokyo coming up I think and am going to buy either the superhooper or hooping harmony LED hoop. There are features I like about both. Would love any input you guys have. My main concern about the superhooper is the switch. Is it easy to hit while hooping? And how about he balance on both?
Harmony's hoop rolls down and i like that, plus rechargeables (sp?) are a plus in my book. Super hooper is way less though. Help me out PLEASE!
Thanks

Hey LA hoopers! My 11 year old niece is eagerly waiting for her new pink hoop and I'm having trouble with the shipping. The hoopers in the hula hoop tribe told me it's all about finding a post office with workers who are either friendly and willing to work with you, or already experienced in shipping hoops. I have found niether. I am willing to drive a bit farther for a smooth easy, cost effective hoop shipping experience.

Anyone out there experienced in shipping hoops that can recommend a post office? I would really appreciate it!

First National Hoop Conference!!!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

Hoop Blissfully,

SAVE THE DATE! HP Retreat set for 6/26- 6/29, 2008!

Save the Date!

We wanted to give everyone advance notice of this amazing event. Last year, we were only able to give two months notice, and we had some hoopers who were not able to come. We had such a good time last year, that we hope that this notice comes early enough that all who would like to come, can make it.

The 2nd Annual National Hoop Path Retreat dates are now set for June 26- June 29th, 2008. We decided to bump up the dates from July so that we do not conflict with Transformus, or the heat of July's southern Sun.

We will follow the same schedule as last year, but will offer an additional beginner set of workshops (three day intensive) immediately preceding the Intermediate/Advanced Workshops each of the three days.

We will provide you with all the details and the full schedule very soon.

If you're too curious to wait, here are some links to last year's event. These are just to give everyone and idea of what this event is like. Please keep in mind that these posts are about last year's retreat.

I'm new to hooping, and I love it so far!!! I make time for it as often as I can! I've made two hoops one with about 1/2 cup of water and one without. I'm wondering if most people put water in their hoops or if they leave them empty....???? I use the one with water, but thought maybe I was making it harder for myself bc it's heavier. Any hooper advice would be helpful!!!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day!!!

I used to hula hoop as a child, and I know I haven't lost the ability, but it's been a long time since I owned a hula hoop (about 20 years).

Does anyone have an interest in getting together to buy materials (splitting the cost) and making hula hoops?

It might be too late to get all the supplies in time for making holiday gifts, but I would still like to make one.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I have been hooping for some years but only last year I started to think about fire hooping. I am curious to try but don't know exactly how to start. What's your experience? How did you start?
I want to try first before I purchase one.

Hey all! I'm sure there are enough of us hoopers in the Hollywood area to get together to hoop! There are plenty of cool spots and I'm always the lone hooper. Let's do a roll call of you in Hollywood! I'll set a time, place and bring some music and extra hoops if I knew there were any of you out there!
YouTube runs too slow on my computer so I'm counting on some live in person hoopiness to materialize here folks!

"Room 2" Hoop Down and Hoop Making at SM Beach This Saturday Afternoon!

Well, it's summertime in SoCal, and Shar and I will be making hoops and hooping at Santa Monica Beach this Saturday afternoon, 8/4, from 3:30-6:30PM. All are invited to come on down and participate! Shar has a coil of 100psi 3/4" tubing, and we have sparkley and other kinds of tape, all available for a small donation. I will be bringing my big "Room 2" boom box and playing cool dance music by local DJs Seda, David Starfire, Stephan, and others (Breaks/Glitch/World Beat mixes).

We will be meeting on the grassy area at the corner of Bay St. and Ocean Ave., one block south of Pico Blvd. Bayside Hotel is across the street for mapquesters: 2001 Ocean Ave. Santa Monica, CA 90405. From the 10FWY, take the 4th St. offramp and turn left. Go a few blocks and turn right on Pico. Go to Main St. and turn right into the Civic Auditorium parking lot, or continue to Ocean Ave. and turn left. Ocean Ave. splits just south of Pico Blvd.--take the road to the right towards the beach, which is Ocean Ave. one block south to Bay St. There is metered parking on the street, but it might be crowded Saturday afternoon. If so, go back to the Civic Center parking lot two blocks away for free parking (enter off of Main St. north of Pico). See you there! :)

Hey all! Okay, so I thought it would be a *fantastic* idea to take a train to SF Bay area for their Sunday hoop group. It's about a 5 hour train trip, so I thought maybe a Saturday night out...maybe see if Hoop Girl is performing!....a stay over in a cheap hotel and a train back. You'll be snug in bed before midnight if you have to work Monday. Any takers? Send me a message!
If you are interested, but can't do it soon, that's fine! We should plan this a bit ahead of time anyways!
Hope someone or sometwo's or three's want to come along! *Crosses fingers*
